Who must efile Forms W-2 and 1099 electronically?

According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Social Security Administration (SSA), if you are required to file 250 or more W-2 or 1099 forms, you must file electronically. The 250-or-more requirement applies separately to each type of form. For example, if you must file 500 Forms 1099 and 100 Forms W-2, you must file Forms 1099 electronically, but you are not required to file Forms W-2 electronically.
