What if TurboTax is updated after I file my return?

When you start TurboTax, you may see a message related to downloading more updates.
Now what?
Updates can contain anything from minor program enhancements to updates for tax law changes. Such updates may or may not impact your bottom line tax liability.
If you filed before late February, the update most likely contains final forms – or fixes to those forms – that may not impact your return. You should know that TurboTax would not have allowed you to file your return if one or more forms were not yet finalized.
Here's what to do if you are offered a post-filing update:
- Before accepting an update, save a tax data file and/or save a PDF copy of your original tax returns - the ones you filed. Move your tax file copies to a safe place (a new directory or CD), so you don't risk overwriting them.
- You can now update TurboTax.
- After updating, review your federal and state refund monitors.
- If the amounts in the Refund Monitors did not change, your return was not affected.
- If the amounts in the Refund Monitors changed since you filed...
- You have not received your tax refund yet (or your owed taxes have not yet been debited or your check cashed), wait for a response from the IRS. Frequently, the IRS or state taxing authority will re-adjust your bill or refund without requiring you to take further action.
- You have received your tax refund (or your owed taxes were debited or your check cashed), you may want to file an amended return.
