Form 8889: Having Difficulty Entering an Amount for Line 3

While completing the Final Review in the TurboTax Interview, you may receive this error:

Form 8889-T or 8889-S; Line 3 Must be Entered

How to resolve this error

Follow the steps below:

  1. Select the Federal Taxes tab, then select Income.
  2. In the Your Income screen, select the Select Specific Topics button.
  3. In the Your Income screen, select Less Common Income, then select the Start or Revisit button for Miscellaneous Income.
  4. In the Any Miscellaneous Income? screen, select the option for Archer MSA and Health Savings Accounts.

  1. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter your 1099-SA information exactly as it appears on the Form 1099-SA you received.
    • If you do not have distributions from your HSA, select Continue. In the Form 1099-SA Summary, select Done.
  2. Continue to follow the on-screen instructions.
    • If you're a beneficiary, in the Beneficiary of Someone's HSA Account? screen, select Yes.
    • In the Report Expenses and HSA Value screen, enter your qualified medical expenses and HSA account value.
  3. If you made an HSA contribution, in the Make HSA Contributions? screen, select Yes.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
    • If you want to edit any of the information you've entered for your contributions, select the Edit button in the Your HSA Contributions Summary screen.
  5. Run the Final Review again to verify that the error has disappeared.

Using forms mode to correct the error

If you continue to receive the error, you can try correcting it in forms mode (TurboTax Desktop only).

  1. Go to the Forms menu, then select Open a Form.
  2. In the Open Form dialog box, scroll down to the HSA Limits Worksheet for Form 8889 (Taxpayer or Spouse).
  3. Select the worksheet, then select Open.
  4. In the HSA Deduction Limits Worksheet, scroll down to the Form 8889, Line 3 section, then enter your information.
  5. When you're finished, select the Close Form button.
