Error 0511: "The primary taxpayer's social security number ..." When Checking E-filing Status

This message occurs when checking the status of an e-filed return. Here's the complete message:

Error Code 0511: The primary taxpayer's social security number with a filing status of single, married filing joint or qualified widower was used on another return with a filing status of married filing separate.

How to resolve this error

This rejection error is issued by the IRS server.

  1. Go back to the Personal Info tab and proceed to the Your Personal Info Summary screen.
  2. Click the Edit button next to the primary taxpayer.
  3. Step through the screens and make sure that the primary taxpayer's information exactly matches the information on his/her social security card.
  4. Repeat Step 3 for all other taxpayers and dependents on the return. If necessary, make corrections and re-submit.

If the information is correct, you'll need to print and mail your return.
