How do I delete a tax return file that was created using TurboTax desktop software?

Microsoft Windows

TurboTax creates a TurboTax subfolder in the My Documents folder which serves as the default location for saving tax files. If you are looking for a particular tax file, you will probably find it in this folder. If you don't see a TurboTax folder, do the following:

  1. Find the tax file you want to delete.
  2. In the Search Results window, right-click the unwanted tax return file(s) and then select Delete. Select Yes to confirm the deletion.
  3. (Optional) To permanently remove the file(s) from your computer, right-click the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop, choose Empty Recycle Bin, and then select Yes.

Mac OS X

By default, TurboTax for the Mac names tax return files with the primary taxpayer's name followed by the 2-digit year, for example John Smith 08.

  1. Find the tax file you want to delete.
  2. In the Search Results page, look for files that display TurboTax Tax Return in the Kind column. These are the tax return files. Drag any unwanted tax return files to the Trash.
  3. (Optional) To permanently remove the file(s) from your computer, empty the Trash.
