What if I can't find last year's return?

If you looked high and low and can't find locate last year's return, you can either request a transcript or order a full copy from the IRS.

Transcripts, which are free, contain the line items from your 1040 form and in most cases are an acceptable substitute for your original tax return.

The cost to order a full copy of your return from the IRS is $57.
