How Do I Delete Forms From My Tax Return?

Deleting Forms in Summary View

Most TurboTax forms can be deleted in what is called a "summary" view. Deleting forms in summary view is the preferred method of deleting forms in TurboTax. This method is not always available however, and you may need to delete forms manually, as described later in this article.

For many types of income or deduction claimed on your return, TurboTax creates a summary view where you can elect to edit, or delete, the form associated with that particular item.  A good example of this type of view is the W-2 Summary view:

In the above example, you can easily edit, or delete, either one of the two Form W-2s by selecting the appropriate Edit or Delete button on the right-hand side of the summary list.

Commonly used forms that can be deleted in a summary view

The summary view for the following commonly used forms can be found by navigating as shown in the following table, then selecting the Update button and following the prompts:

Deleting Forms Manually

Caution: Deleting a form in any manner other than using the summary views described above may cause odd behavior, like blank or persistent "ghost" forms. For this reason, we don't recommend removing a form manually unless specifically instructed to do so, or you fully understand where the data comes from and how that form relates to other forms and schedules in your return.

Do not delete Schedule C if you need to remove business information that transferred over from the prior year's return. Instead, see Removing a Schedule C business that transferred over from last year's return.

Tips and tricks for manually deleting forms in TurboTax

Here are some general tips and tricks to use when deleting forms--

  • Form 1040, 1040A, and 1040-EZ. Although you can manually delete these forms, it is generally not a good idea. If you are using TurboTax Online, try starting over again instead.
  • Parent/Child Forms. Sometimes forms come in pairs. For example, a Schedule E (the "parent" form) may be tied to any number of different rental property forms (the "child" forms). If you want to delete the parent form, always delete the child forms first.
  • IRS Forms vs. TurboTax Forms (aka What Form?). Sometimes there is no IRS form associated with what you are trying to delete, and by extension there is no summary view. A good example is dependents. There is no specific IRS form associated with a dependent, but if you want to delete a dependent (maybe because you want to reenter the dependent's information), you can do so manually because there is a TurboTax form you can delete.
  • TurboTax Online vs. TurboTax CD/Download. It is much easier to both troubleshoot form problems, and delete forms, when using TurboTax CD/Download. Yes, it will cost a little more, but depending on the type of problem you are having, it may save you a lot of time.
