Here's how to tell them apart. If you see the Home tab while working on your return, you're using TurboTax Online.

Another distinctive TurboTax Online characteristic is the animated Processing... graphic that appears after every screen.

CD/Download Versions

The TurboTax CD/Download interface lacks the Home tab:

TurboTax 2010 for Windows CD/Download
TurboTax for Windows tabs

TurboTax 2010 for Macintosh CD/Download
TurboTax for Macintosh tabs

Also, the animated graphic in the CD/Download version doesn't appear after every screen and never uses the word Processing:
