Forcefully Shut Down Programs That Won't Close

If you can't close browser windows or exit programs normally, you can force them to close using Windows Task Manager.

Select your Windows version below for instructions.

Windows 7 or Vista

  1. Press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys simultaneously.
  2. Select Start Task Manager.
  3. In the Windows Task Manager window, select Applications.
  4. Select the window or program to close, and then select End Task.
  5. Repeat the preceding steps for each window or program to close.

Windows XP

Follow these steps:

  1. Press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys simultaneously.
  2. In the Windows Security window, select Task Manager.
  3. In the Windows Task Manager window, select Applications.
  4. Select the window or program to close, and then select End Task.
  5. Repeat the preceding steps for each window or program to close.
