The IRS works hard to issue refunds as quickly as possible, but some tax returns take longer to process than others for many reasons, and may require additional review. Some issues that will delay your refund include when a return:
- includes errors
- is incomplete
- needs further review for a variety of reasons
- includes Form 8397, Injured Spouse Allocation, which could take up to 14 weeks to process
If the IRS needs more information to process your tax return, they will contact you by mail.
Remember, if you've checked the IRS Where's My Refund? tool and it has indicated that your return has been received but the refund has not yet been approved, the IRS has your return and is processing it.
