California: Frequently-Asked Questions
How is my California Adjusted Gross Income calculated?
California starts with your federal AGI and then makes adjustments. Refer to Schedule CA: California Adjustments to get the line-by-line calculations.
Why are some of my California forms not printing out?
Certain California forms such as Schedule D or P may not print with your state return, or even appear in your TurboTax return. This happens because those forms do not affect the tax calculations on your return. The California Franchise Tax Board only needs those forms which directly affect the calculations on your return when you file.
How does California calculate my capital loss carryover from last year?
Enter your California capital loss carryover on your federal return (unless you transferred your return from last year, in which case we've already transferred it over for you.)
- Click the Federal Taxes tab (or the Personal tab if using Home & Business) and then click Wages & Income below it.
- Choose Explore on my Own.
- On the Income screen, scroll down and revisit the Capital Loss Carryovers topic, located in the Investment Income section.
- Proceed to the California Capital Loss Carryover screen.
Why is TurboTax figuring my capital gain (or loss) as though I am a full-year resident?
It may seem that way, but TurboTax is actually adjusting your capital gain/loss appropriately on Schedule CA(540NR): California Adjustments. This schedule shows you how TurboTax is performing the calculations.
Why I am I having trouble with the Child and Dependent Care Expenses Credit?
The caregiver's address must be in California to qualify for the credit. Here's how to get back to this section:
- Click the Federal Taxes tab (or the Personal tab if using Home & Business) and then click Deductions & Credits below it.
- Choose Explore on my Own.
- On the Deductions and Credits screen, revisit the Child and Dependent Care topic, located in the You and Your Family section.
Why don't I qualify for the Renter’s Credit?
The California Franchise Board lists the qualifications at www.ftb.ca.gov/individuals/faq/ivr/203.shtml.
How do I edit my California return?
On the screen You've Finished Your California Return, select the second or third radio button (either I've made federal return changes... or I'd like to view or update...).
