Access your state program in TurboTax Online
Before you start working on your state return in TurboTax Online, make sure you complete your Federal return first.
Why? Our state programs rely on entries made in your federal return, such as your filing status, adjusted gross income, and W-2 entries.
For this reason, it's not possible to file a state-only return in TurboTax Online, nor the TurboTax CD/Download software.
Tip: If you make updates to your federal return after you completed your state return, we highly recommend walking through the state interview again. Changes to the federal return sometimes trigger new questions in the state return, which can impact your state return's bottom line!
Starting your state return
After you've finished the federal portion of the interview, TurboTax Online automatically prompts you to start working on your state return.
You can also jump to your state return at any time by clicking the State Taxes tab near the top of your screen. Remember to revisit your state return if you make any changes to your federal return, as we mentioned above.
State tax forms become available from about mid-December through late January, depending on the state and the form. TurboTax Online will let you know when those forms are expected to be available. You can also click here for up-to-date state form availability dates.
