Why am I being charged to e-file my TurboTax Online return for New York?

Starting in tax year 2010, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance mandated that tax preparation software companies like us were no longer allowed to charge a separate state e-filing fee.

However, when you try to e-file your New York return in TurboTax Online, you're being asked for payment. What gives?

Explanation

TurboTax Online has always charged a tax preparation fee – not an e-filing fee – to prepare and file federal and state returns. E-filing is included for free.

The same tax prep fee is charged no matter if you e-file your return or print and mail it in. More info
