How to Amend the State Return, and not the Federal Return
You can amend the 2012 state tax return you filed with TurboTax to fix a mistake or to take a credit or deduction you missed on the state return.
Caution. Since the calculation of most state taxes begins with either federal gross income or federal taxable income, be very careful about amending the state return without also amending the federal return. As a general rule, you should always amend the federal first, then the state.
Before you can amend your state return, your state return must have been accepted (if you e-filed) or mailed (if you paper-filed).
E-filed returns that are in Pending or Rejected status cannot be amended. More info

Note: If it's been 3 weeks since you filed your amended return, you can use the IRS' Where's My Amended Return tool to stay updated on its status.
