Move Your Tax Return to a Different Computer

Maybe you bought a new computer, or maybe you need to move your tax return file to a different computer. Here's how to do that.

The TurboTax software should already be installed on the new computer; you'll need it to open and read your tax return data file. Windows install instructions | Mac install instructions

Once TurboTax has been installed, follow these directions to move the file using a flash drive or other portable device:

1. Find your tax return file on the original computer:
   • Find TurboTax tax files (Win)
   • Find TurboTax tax files (Mac)
2. Then, on the original computer, make a backup copy of your tax return file onto a flash drive or other portable device.
3. Insert the flash drive or other device on the new computer and then follow the directions to retrieve and open your tax return.
