South Carolina 2010: Certain Customers May have an Incorrect Tuition Tax Credit

South Carolina has a tuition tax credit that is available to certain students, who graduated from a South Carolina high school during or after May 2005, and attend a qualified higher learning institution within 12 months of high school graduation.

Certain customers may not have received the full tuition tax credit on their 2010 South Carolina tax return and may have overpaid their South Carolina income taxes.

The issue has been fixed.

How to tell if you are impacted

 You are affected if:

  • You filed a 2010 South Carolina tax return prior to 2/19/2011 AND
  • For tax year 2010, you had more than one person (you, your spouse, and/or dependent) listed on your tax return as eligible for this tuition tax credit AND
  • Your South Carolina tax return shows only one person’s tax credit (see SC Form I-319).

If you are affected, you may have overpaid your South Carolina tax. You will need to amend your South Carolina tax return.
