Minnesota 2012: Political Designation Misapplied
Minnesota taxpayers are allowed to make $5 contributions to the State Election Campaign Fund and designate the political party of their choice on their Minnesota tax return.
TurboTax has fixed a programming error that caused the taxpayer’s political designation to be communicated incorrectly to the Minnesota State Department of Revenue. The error occurred on the 2012 MN Revenue income tax return (M1) and the 2012 MN property tax refund (M1PR.)
This impacts returns submitted electronically or by paper before March 1, 2013 where a taxpayer indicated they want to designate $5 from the general state fund to a political party of their choice.
TurboTax is working to ensure that the election is correctly applied to the political party selected on the Minnesota tax return. There is no additional action you need to take.
Note: This error does not impact the accuracy of the Minnesota tax return or the amount of the refund to be received or balance due.
This issue was fixed on February 28, 2013.
Recently receive an email dated 3/6/2013 from TurboTax Support regarding your 2012 Minnesota return?
First, we are sorry for any undue alarm. Only a small percentage of the customers we sent this email to are actually impacted by the programming error mentioned, so there is a good chance this doesn't apply to you.
Also, receiving this email doesn't mean your return was sent to the Department of Revenue. The email sent incorrectly stated "Because you submitted a TurboTax return to the state of Minnesota prior to March 1, 2013" when it should have stated "If you filed your Minnesota return prior to March 1, 2013".
If you did print and/or mail a Minnesota return prior to March 1, 2013, please follow the directions provided in the email.
