Minnesota 2011: Property Tax Refund Incorrectly Calculated when Minnesota Income is Below Filing Requirements

In certain situations, TurboTax does not correctly calculate the Minnesota Property Tax Refund on Form M1PR. Line 1 of Form M1PR does not get calculated when ALL of the following applies to your tax situation.

  • Filing a part year resident of Minnesota
  • Income earned in Minnesota is under the filing requirements of $9,500.00

Workaround - Desktop

To workaround the issue, an override will need to be performed in order to allow the Minnesota Income to flow to Form M1PR:

  1. Open your tax return in TurboTax and click on the Forms icon located in the top right corner of the TurboTax window
  2. In the Forms in My Return section, locate and click on Schedule M1NR under Minnesota Individual
  3. Schedule M1NR will appear to the right of the screen, Go to line 23
  4. Above line 23, there is a check box to specify that you are under the minimum filing requirements, Right click on the check box and select Override
  5. Click on the red (X), this will remove the check
  6. In the Forms in My Return section locate and click on Form M1PR
  7. Click on the File menu and select Print
  8. Ensure that Form M1PR is selected and click on Print
  9. After Form M1PR has printed, go back to Schedule M1NR
  10. Again right click on the same check box that was overridden, select Cancel Override
