Michigan 2011: Homestead Property Tax Credit on Principal Residence

Michigan taxpayers, who owned, rented or occupied a homestead on which property taxes were paid, may be allowed to reduce their Michigan tax.

Certain customers, who qualify for the Homestead Property Tax Credit, may have filed an incorrect Michigan tax return.

TurboTax has fixed this issue.
 

How to tell if you may be impacted

You may be affected if ALL of the following are true:

  1. You filed your 2011 Michigan tax return before January 28, 2012 AND
  2. Your federal tax return included a Form 1098 (Mortgage Interest Statement) with an amount in Box 5 (Property tax) AND
  3. Your homestead was in Michigan and you resided in Michigan for at least six months during 2011 AND
  4. You household income(based on MI Household Income checklist) was less than $82,650 AND
  5. Your MI-1040CR did not have an amount listed on Line 7 (Total property taxes paid)

If you are affected, you may have overpaid your Michigan tax. You may need to amend your Michigan tax return.

  • To do it yourself, please follow these step-by-step instructions.
  • After you make the changes to your tax return, you will need to mail a copy of your amended state return.
  • Your printed return will include instructions on how and where to mail it.

  1. Please download and print this Authorization Form.
  2. Complete the form and fax it to us at the number printed at the top of the form.
  3. A TurboTax representative will contact you (within 15 days) when your corrected return is ready to be securely emailed back to you.
  4. You can print, sign, and mail the corrected return to the state taxing authority.
