Can I deduct medical expenses for my spouse or dependent if filing separately?

When married filing separately, if the medical expense for you, your spouse or your dependent is paid from separate funds only the person that paid the bill can include the expense.

Medical fees paid from a joint account are treated as paid equally unless you can show otherwise. Federal law does not recognize same sex marriages.
