Some troubleshooting procedures and problem solutions require that you locate hidden files and folders so you can modify them.

Choose your version of Windows for instructions.

Windows 7 or Vista

  1. Right-click the Start button, and then select Explore.
  2. On the Organize menu, select Folder and Search Options.
  3. On the View tab, choose Show hidden files and folders.
  4. Clear the Hide extensions for known file types checkbox.
  5. Select OK.

Windows XP

  1. Right-click the Start button, and then select Explore.
  2. On the Tools menu, select Folder Options.
  3. On the View tab, choose Show hidden files and folders.
  4. Clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box.
  5. Select OK.
