Unable to locate setup.exe file on TurboTax for Windows CD

After you insert the TurboTax CD to install the program, nothing happens. When you look for the setup.exe file on the CD, you cannot find it.

Possible Causes and Solutions

Dirty CD or CD/DVD drive

Click here and follow the instructions to check your CD and drive.

Mac-compatability software is installed on your computer

Third-party software that allows Windows to read Mac CDs and iPods (such as MediaFour's XPlay or MacDrive) can cause this problem.

Because your TurboTax CD has both Windows and Mac files on it, the third-party program assumes you're trying to install a Mac program and hides the Windows file, including setup.exe.

To resolve, disable or uninstall the third-party software. Refer to your software's instructions or website if you need further instructions.

Other Workarounds

  1. Re-insert the TurboTax CD into the CD drive.
  2. Click Start, then Computer (Windows 7 or Vista) or My Computer (Windows XP).
  3. Right-click the CD drive and select Show Windows Files.
  4. Double-click the CD drive, and then double-click setup.exe to begin the TurboTax for Windows installation.

Finally, if nothing seems to be working, you can start Windows in Selective Startup Mode and then install from the hard drive.
