If you're having problems installing TurboTax to a different location on your computer (e.g., you keep getting the message Please select a valid installation folder), this article will help.
But first, you need to know that:
- We do not recommend installing TurboTax onto a removable drive. Here's why.
- Certain TurboTax components must always be installed onto the system drive (usually drive C:). This means that even if you install TurboTax to a different location, you may still need to make room for these components on your system drive if it's near or at capacity.
Changing the installation drive
To change the default drive:
- In the Where Do You Want to Install? window, click the arrow to the left of Change Location. (Not the New Location button.)

- In the Explorer window, choose the drive and folder where you want to install TurboTax. If the folder does not yet exist on that drive:
- Click the New Location button.
- In the Create New Folder window, enter the folder name and click Create.
