Error 1613: "This installation package cannot be installed..."

Error 1613 occurs when updating TurboTax. The full error message reads:

This installation package cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service. You must install a Windows service pack that contains a newer version of the Windows Installer service.

Possible Cause

The computer does not have the required version of Windows Installer. This can occur if the message to restart the computer was canceled or ignored after installing TurboTax.

(TurboTax installation will also update the Windows Installer if needed, but for the update to fully take effect, the computer must be restarted.)

Solution

The easiest solution is to close TurboTax, restart your computer, then try updating again. If the problem persists, download the Windows Installer.
