Error: "A version of TurboTax 2011 is already installed..."

The following message appears when installing TurboTax. Similar messages may occur in older versions as well.
A version of TurboTax 2011 is already installed. You need to remove it before you can install this version. To remove TurboTax, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel.
The cause of this issue is when a previous TurboTax installation did not finish installing or uninstalling, leaving it in a broken state. The residual files on your computer are detected by the TurboTax installer, which then "thinks" the program is already installed.
Solution
The first solution you should try, if you haven't already, is uninstalling TurboTax and then reinstalling it again. If that fails, follow these steps:
- Forcefully uninstall TurboTax.
- Manually delete these 3 folders (replace XX with the 2-digit tax year):
- Windows 7 and Vista
- C:\ProgramData\Intuit\TurboTax\TYXX
- C:\Program Files\TurboTax\[version] 20XX, where [version] is Basic, Deluxe, Premier or Home & Business
- C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\Intuit\TurboTax\TYXX, where [user] is your user name
- Windows XP
- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Intuit\TurboTax\MSI\TYXX
- C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\Intuit\TurboTax\TYXX, where [user] is your user name
- C:\Program Files\TurboTax\[version] 20XX, where [version] is Basic, Deluxe, Premier or Home & Business
- Windows 7 and Vista
- Now try installing TurboTax again.
