Review, Change, or Delete Transferred or Imported Data

After you've transferred or imported data into your tax return, it's not a bad idea to review the data to make sure it's accurate. If not, you can always update or even delete it.

Choose your version of TurboTax for instructions. Which one do I choose?

TurboTax Online

You'll see transferred and imported information as you prepare your return. To edit or delete individual items, select the field and type over the entry or clear the info using your Delete or Backspace keys.

You can also remove select imported data from the Import Summary screen.

If you need to delete all your transferred and/or imported data, you can clear your tax return. You then have the option of re-transferring last year's data if desired.

Why is the "Clear your 2011 return and re-transfer your data" option not displayed?

If you've just cleared your 2011 return and started over, you need to log out and log back in to view this link.

As you proceed through the Interview, you'll see what was transferred or imported. You can simply update or remove this information as needed.

Here's a quicker way to see everything you transferred and imported:

  1. From the TurboTax Tools menu, select My Tax Data.
  2. In the My Tax Data window, the Source column will indicate whether the data on the corresponding Form and Line was transferred, imported, or entered by you.
  3. (Optional) Click the Source column heading to group and alphabetize the list.
  4. Select the line item you want to view or change, and then click the Jump To Interview or Go To Form to view, change, or remove the line item in Interview or Forms Mode, respectively.

To delete a large amount of transferred data, it might be easier to start over with a new tax return by choosing New Tax Return from the TurboTax File menu (Windows) or the TurboTax menu (Mac). If you do this, we also recommend deleting the original tax return file (which contains the transferred info) so you don't confuse the two later on.

And if you want to delete some or all of your imported information:

  1. Select Remove Imported Data from the TurboTax File menu (Windows) or the TurboTax menu (Mac).
  2. Select the item(s) you want to remove and then click Delete Selected.
  3. Click Yes to confirm.

Read this if you imported from Quicken or QuickBooks

There's nothing stopping you from updating or deleting info imported from Quicken or QuickBooks, but then the information in your tax return will no longer match the original data source.

This may cause confusion down the road, for example if you are audited and have to recall why the info you entered in TurboTax differs from your original financial records.

Instead of changing or removing imported information, it's generally better to update the information in your financial program before importing. That way your data stays consistent.

If you've already imported, you can re-import the updated information from your financial program by selecting the replace option when prompted.
