Filing jointly usually gives you a lower tax bill because many deductions and credits are unavailable to taxpayers filing separately.
However, filing jointly also means you and your spouse are responsible for the accuracy of your joint return as well as any future taxes or penalties. When you file separately, you are only responsible for the accuracy and payment of taxes on your own return.
