Filing a Paper Return by Mail

If you can't—or don't want to—e-file your tax return, you can use TurboTax to print and file a conventional paper return.

TurboTax Online

  1. Sign in to TurboTax Online, if you aren't already signed in.
  2. In TurboTax Online, click File.
    • Don't click "File" on this screen. Make sure you're in TurboTax Online, which should be running in a separate window or tab.
  3. Proceed to the We've determined the fastest way to get your federal refunds screen.
    • On that screen, click the blue I'd like to change filing methods link, located near the bottom.
  4. In the pop-up window, select the File by mail option for the return(s) you want to print and mail instead of e-filing. Click Save to close the window.
  5. Continue following the on-screen instructions to completion. TurboTax will print all official tax forms required to file your return, along with your filing instructions.

If you haven't already paid for TurboTax Online, you'll be prompted to pay before you can print your return.

  5. Continue following the on-screen instructions to completion. TurboTax will print all official tax forms required to file your return, along with your filing instructions.

OK, I printed my return. Where do I mail it?

Look for a piece of paper titled File by Mail Instructions for your Federal Tax Return. Click here for an example.

TurboTax will also generate a separate File by Mail Instructions document for every state return you're paper-filing.

These filing instructions contain everything you need to complete the filing process, including the government mailing address. Do not mail these instructions with your tax return.
