State E-Filing Requirements
You may remember not being able to e-file your TurboTax State return until your federal return had been e-filed, and in some cases, accepted by the IRS.
Well the good news is that you can e-file your state return before you've e-filed your federal return!
The only catch is, make sure your federal tax return is complete (even if you haven't filed it yet) before you send off your state return.
This is important because TurboTax State programs "pull" information from your federal return, and if your federal return is incomplete, your state return will also be incomplete – which means you'll have to file an amended state return at some point down the road.
Note: You still need to prepare your federal return in order to prepare a state return in TurboTax, as TurboTax State is not sold as a stand-alone product. More info
How many state returns can I e-file?
The short answer is that you can e-file up to five state returns per federal return in TurboTax Online, and up to three state returns per federal in TurboTax CD/Download software. Click here for more information.
