Start Windows in Safe Mode

Restarting Windows in Safe Mode can be used to work around connectivity issues, such as e-filing, updating, and downloading.
Windows 7 or Vista
- On the Windows taskbar, click Start, type msconfig in the Search field, and press Enter.
- Click the msconfig icon, accepting any security messages that appear.
- On the Boot tab, select both Safe boot and Network, and then click OK.
- Click Restart.
To return to normal Windows mode, repeat these steps, except this time clear the Safe boot and Network checkboxes in Step 3.
Windows XP
- On the Windows taskbar, click Start and choose Run.
- Type msconfig into the Open field and click OK.
- On the BOOT.INI tab, select both Safe boot and Network, and then click OK.
- Click Restart.
- Click Yes at the "Windows is running in safe mode" message.
To return to normal Windows mode, repeat Steps 1-4, except this time clear the Safe boot and Network checkboxes in Step 3.
Windows 2000
- On the Windows taskbar, click Start, and then click Shut Down.
- Select Restart, and then click OK.
- As Windows restarts, press the F8 key repeatedly until the black-and-white Starting Windows screen appears.
- On the Windows 2000 Advanced Options menu, select Safe Mode with Networking, and then press Enter.
Note: TurboTax 2009 and later versions no longer run on Windows 2000.
