Message: "There is an update available..." when attempting to e-file

If your TurboTax software program is not up-to-date with the latest release, you may receive a message when you attempt to e-file your tax return. This message appears because one or more forms on your tax return have changed since you last updated. For example, we may have fixed a calculation error on one of the forms in your return.

Solution

To ensure accuracy, the form(s) will need to be updated to the latest version before you can e-file your return.

Simply download the latest update; when finished, you'll be taken to the beginning of the File section and you can step through the screens again to e-file your return.

If you're unable to update through TurboTax, you'll need to manually install the federal update and also re-download any state programs to get the most up-to-date version. Then, click the File tab and continue through the steps to e-file your return.

If the problem persists (Windows)

Sometimes, you'll continue to get this message even though your program is fully up-to-date.

If that happens, restart your computer, then reopen TurboTax and continue e-filing your return.

In rare cases, the message will persist even after restarting Windows. If that happens:

  1. Uninstall TurboTax.
  2. Browse to the following folder on your hard drive and delete it. (In the following folder path, replace [version] with the version you're using, e.g. Basic, Deluxe, Premier, or Home & Business)
    • Windows 64-bit versions – C:\Program Files (x86)\TurboTax\[version] 2012
    • Windows 32-bit versions – C:\Program Files\TurboTax\[version] 2012
  3. Reinstall TurboTax, and then reopen the program and e-file your return.
