Find your 2010 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI)

Look on your originally filed – not amended! – 2010 tax return

To e-file your 2011 federal tax return, the IRS requires you to verify your identity.

One verification method is your 2010 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), which you can get from your original, unamended 2010 tax return. (The other, quicker method is to simply request a PIN from the IRS.)

Click the 1040 form you filed in 2010 to see exactly where to find your AGI. Which one do I click?

Other places to look for your AGI ... or not

If you used a tax service to prepare your 2010 return, you may find your AGI printed on the cover or summary sheet that comes with your prepared return package.

We guarantee that you won't find your AGI on:

  • Your W-2 or 1099 form;
  • Unemployment papers;
  • The internet;
  • Any other official-looking document, unless it happens to be your 2010 tax return or an official IRS transcript.

AGI tips for new (and former) joint filers

Enter your AGI as it appears on your originally filed 2010 return, or a 0 if you didn't file a 2010 return.

Do not split, allocate, or combine AGI amounts, even if doing so seems more logical to you.

Examples

  • A couple that filed separate returns in 2010 and are filing jointly in 2011 should enter two separate AGI amounts, one from each respective spouse's 2010 return.
  • A couple filing separately in 2011 that filed jointly in 2010 should each enter the same AGI amount from their jointly-filed 2010 return.
  • A divorced taxpayer who filed jointly in 2010 but will not file jointly in 2011 should enter the full 2010 AGI, even if their ex-spouse earned all of the income in 2010.

What if I cannot find, or did not file, a 2010 return?

The good news is you won't need your 2010 AGI if:

  • You entered an Electronic Filing PIN.
  • You transferred data from a 2010 return that you filed using TurboTax.
    • This automatically transfers your 2010 AGI to your 2011 return.
  • You didn't file a 2010 tax return.
    • In that case, just enter 0 as your AGI.

Otherwise, if you need to verify your identity for e-filing you can:

  • Use an Electronic Filing PIN instead. Follow the directions in TurboTax or click here for instructions.
  • Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and tell the agent you need your originally filed 2010 AGI—not a revised or amended AGI—so you can e-file. Please note that wait times may be lengthy.
