TurboTax Business - File an Application for Extension

If you need extra time to file your tax return, TurboTax Business can help you prepare Form 7004: Application for Automatic Extension.

  • Automatic extensions are available for a six-month period for corporations and S-corporations, and a five-month period for partnerships, estates and trusts.
  • You must print and mail the extension application, Form 7004. Extension applications cannot be e-filed.
  • Make sure that you update your TurboTax software before filing an extension so that you have the most recent TurboTax Business forms installed on your computer.
  • Tax payments are due on the regular due date for the type of business return you're filing.

How to File Your Business Extension

To apply for an automatic extension and prepare Form 7004 in TurboTax Business:

  1. Open your return in TurboTax Business.
  2. In the search window, type "extension" and then click Find.
  3. On the Which Return Do You Need to File? screen, select Extension of time to file (Form 7004).
  4. Click Continue and follow on-screen instructions.
  5. Eventually you will get to the Where and When to File Your Extension screen. Click the Print Extension button and mail the printout to the address on the screen.
