Can I deduct sales taxes in addition to state taxes paid?

You have the option of claiming either general state and local sales taxes or state and local income taxes.
If you take the sales tax deduction, you are allowed the greater of the general sales tax per IRS tables plus major purchases such as vehicles, aircraft, boats, and certain homebuilding materials (or the actual sales tax paid for all items).
