Your e-filed return is rejected with error codes 0510, IND-509, IND-512, F1040-510, F1040A-510, F1040EZ-510, F1040-512, F1040A-512, F1040A-513, F1040A-513, F1040A-145, or F1040SSPR-512, along with this explanation:

This taxpayer or taxpayer's spouse has been claimed as a dependent on someone else's return (according to returns the IRS has already received). Make sure that no other person can claim this taxpayer or spouse as a dependent (for example, the parents or grandparents), and that the dependent's Social Security number has not been used on another return as the primary or secondary taxpayer's SSN (the persons listed first and second on the return).

Possible Causes

  • Another taxpayer has already claimed you or your spouse as a dependent (most common reason)
  • The dependent you are trying to claim has already filed his/her own return (second most common reason)
  • The same Social Security number was entered for a taxpayer and a dependent on the return
  • A Social Security number was entered incorrectly.

Do This First

Get the Social Security cards for everybody on your return – you, your spouse, and all dependents. Then, follow these steps to make sure the information was entered correctly:

  1. Open your return in TurboTax, and then click the Personal Info tab.
  2. Continue until you reach the Your Personal Info Summary screen.
  3. Make sure that the Social Security number for you (and your spouse, if filing jointly) exactly match the information on your card(s).
    • If the information is wrong, click the Edit button and make the corrections on the next screen.
    • Continue until you're back at the Your Personal Info Summary screen.
  4. If you have any dependents, scroll down and click Edit next to the dependents section. (Otherwise, skip to Step 5.)
    1. Click Edit next to the first dependent listed on the Your Children and Others You Support screen.
    2. Proceed through the interview, making sure that the dependent's Social Security number exactly matches the information on their card.
    3. If the information is wrong, correct it.
    4. Continue until you're back at the Your Children and Others You Support screen.
    5. Repeat Steps b-d for any additional dependents. When finished, click Done.
  5. Click the Done with Personal Info button at the bottom of the Your Personal Info Summary screen.

If you corrected any Social Security numbers, e-file your return again.

Otherwise, if you verified that all Social Security numbers were entered correctly, proceed to Next Steps, below.

Next Steps

If you verified that you entered everybody's Social Security correctly, you can be certain that another taxpayer (parent or grandparent) has already claimed you or your spouse as a dependent on their return, or the dependent you are trying to claim (college-age student, newlywed son or daughter, etc.), has already claimed an exemption on their return.

At this point, you can either remove the exemption or the dependent so you can e-file, or leave everything as is and file a paper return. The IRS won't let you e-file if you try to claim someone who has already claimed themselves or has been claimed on another return.

To remove the exemption for yourself or your spouse (i.e., someone else already claimed you or your spouse):

  1. Open your return in TurboTax, and then click the Personal Info tab.
  2. Continue until you reach the Your Personal Info Summary screen.
  3. Click the Edit button next to the taxpayer for whom you want to remove the exemption (you or your spouse).
  4. On the next screen, select the checkbox Someone else can claim [Name] on their tax return
  5. Choose Someone will claim me in 2012 and click Continue.
  6. Back on the Your Personal Info Summary screen, click Done with Personal Info at the bottom, and then e-file your return again.

To remove a dependent (i.e., your dependent already claimed themselves as an exemption):

  1. Open your return in TurboTax, and then click the Personal Info tab.
  2. Continue until you reach the Your Personal Info Summary screen.
  3. Next to the dependents section (you may need to scroll down), click Edit.
  4. Proceed to the Your Children and Others You Support screen. You may have to go through several screens to get there.
  5. On that screen, click Delete next to the dependent you want to remove, and then click Yes to confirm.
  6. Click Done. Back on the Your Personal Info Summary screen, click Done with Personal Info at the bottom, and then e-file your return again.

If you decided to leave your return unchanged and file a paper return, the IRS will eventually contact you and the other taxpayer to resolve the duplicate usage.

After the dust settles, one of you will be required to repay any additional taxes, plus penalties and interest, that were attributed to the duplicate claim. That person will also need to file an amended return.
