Error 0528: "On Form 8863 (education credits), the student's Social Security number..."

You may receive this error message when checking the e-file status of your federal return. Here's the complete message:

On Form 8863 (education credits), the student's Social Security number cannot be used more than once in the return or on another return.

How to resolve this error

This rejection error is issued by the IRS server. The student's social security number has already been used to claim the education credit on a different return.

If you happen to be the parent(s), most likely your student already claimed the education credit on his/her return. And if you're the student, sorry, your parents beat you to it.

There's also a small chance that the student's SSN was entered incorrectly, either by you or by another taxpayer who mistyped the social security number on their return. Double-check your return; if the student's SSN is correct, you'll need to print and mail your return.
