E-file rejection errors IND-031, IND-032, 0679, or 0680

Your e-filed return is rejected for errors IND-031, IND-032, 0679, or 0680, along with an explanation similar to one of these:

'PrimaryPriorYearPIN' or 'PrimaryElectronicFilingPIN' or 'PrimaryPriorYearAGI' in the Return Header must match the e-File database.

Authentication Record – The amount you entered for your prior year's adjusted gross income (AGI) or your Prior Year PIN does not match what the IRS has in its records.

This rejection occurs because the IRS is unable to verify your (or your spouse's, if filing jointly) identity for e-filing.

Recommended solution: Get your e-filing PIN

The quickest and easiest fix is to enter your IRS e-filing PIN:

  1. Go to the IRS PIN request website or call the automated IRS number 1-866-704-7388 to obtain a new e-filing PIN for:
    • The first taxpayer listed on the return (for error codes IND-031 or 0679)
    • The spouse on a joint return (for error codes IND-032 or 0680)
  2. Once you have received your PIN(s), open your return.
  3. Click the Print & File tab, select Check E-file Status right below it, and then click Help Me Fix It.
  4. On the next screen, enter the 5-digit PIN you obtained in Step 1 and click Continue.

Note: Although your rejection message may mention something about an incorrect prior-year PIN, do not enter last year's PIN, as this will cause another rejection.

  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to re-submit your corrected return. Make sure you go all the way to the green Transmit Returns Now button to re-send your return.

Alternative solution: Enter your 2010 AGI

Another way to verify your identity for e-filing is by entering last year's Adjusted Gross Income, or AGI.

To do this, you'll need a copy of your originally filed (not amended) 2010 tax return. Click here for instructions.

  1. Once you know your 2010 AGI, open your return.
  2. Click the Print & File tab, select Check E-file Status right below it, and then click Help Me Fix It.
  3. On the next screen, enter your AGI and click Continue.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to re-submit your corrected return. Make sure you go all the way to the green Transmit Returns Now button to re-send your return.

If you keep getting rejected

If you're entering "0" as your AGI because you didn't file a 2010 return, first the e-filing PIN solution mentioned above.

  • If you are able to get a PIN from the IRS, then you did file a 2010 return. Enter your PIN per the instructions above.
  • If you are unable to get your PIN, contact the IRS for further instructions.

If you are certain that you're entering the correct 2010 AGI, try the e-filing PIN solution above. And if that still doesn't work, try entering an AGI of "0". This often works for customers who filed a very late 2010 return, or if the IRS is still processing your 2010 return.

Still unable to e-file? You can either file a paper return or contact us for troubleshooting assistance.
