Recently, the IRS sent out Letter 4881c.

If you reported the American Opportunity Tax Credit on your 2011 return, you may have received Letter 4881c from the IRS.

Most commonly, you were sent this letter because:

Tthe IRS never received Form 1098-T from the educational institution attended by your dependent.
The student claimed was younger than 10 years old.
