If you pay qualified education expenses with tax-free funds, you cannot claim a deduction or credit for these but must first reduce the total expenses by any tax-free educational assistance such as scholarships, grants, employer-provided or veterans educational assistance, and refunds you receive. Amounts that do not reduce qualified education expenses are wages, loans, gifts, an inheritance, or payments with student’s personal savings.
