Error 512 occurs when TurboTax opens your return. Your return (.tax data file) has somehow become damaged or corrupted on your computer, and TurboTax cannot use it.

Solution

Unfortunately, you will need to recreate your return from scratch. On the File menu in TurboTax, select New Tax Return.
