Access 2010 or Earlier Tax Returns
Which version of TurboTax did you use to prepare your prior-year return?
TurboTax Online Basic, Deluxe, Premier, or Home and Business
As long as you completed your prior-year TurboTax Online Basic, Deluxe, Premier, or Home & Business return, you can retrieve a PDF copy from our secure server.
Completed means you paid the TurboTax Online fee by credit/debit card, refund transfer, or pre-paid code. Finished but unpaid returns are not complete.
Here's how:
- Sign in to TurboTax Online 2011 using your prior-year login info.
- Do this even if you're not using TurboTax Online for your 2011 return.
- Lost your login? Click here for help.
- Accept the license agreement and click Continue.
- If prompted, select the version you want to use for your 2011 return.
- If you don't plan on using TurboTax Online 2011, or you're not yet sure, we suggest selecting Deluxe.
- Do not select Free Edition, as you will not be able to access your prior-year return.
- On the Welcome Back screen, click the View your returns from prior years link, right below the Continue button.

- Wait for the PDF file to finish opening, which may take a minute or two.

TurboTax Online Free Edition
Unlike TurboTax Online Basic and higher, tax returns prepared through TurboTax Online Free Edition (not to be confused with TurboTax Freedom Edition, below) do not include the 24/7 access feature.
If you need a copy of your prior-year return prepared through TurboTax Online Free Edition, you have 3 options:
- Request a free transcript of your federal return from the IRS. A transcript is used to verify income and some financial institutions accept it as a substitute for your original tax return. Click here for instructions or visit IRS Tax Tip 2010-13 for more details.
- Order an exact copy of your tax return, including all attachments, from the IRS for $57.00. See IRS Tax Topic 156 for complete instructions.
- Download your 2010 tax file and the 2010 software to open it in. Click here and follow the instructions.
TurboTax Freedom Edition
TurboTax Freedom Edition (not to be confused with TurboTax Online Free Edition, above) is offered in conjunction with the IRS Free File Alliance. If you prepared your tax return at taxfreedom.com, you used TurboTax Freedom Edition.
Click here and sign in to access your prior year Freedom Edition return.
- Forgot your prior-year user ID or password? Click here for login help.
- Can't find the return you're looking for? Click here for more options.
TurboTax CD/Download Software
Unlike TurboTax Online, we are unable to store tax returns that were prepared in TurboTax CD/download software because the data is stored locally on your hard drive. E-filing does not create archive copies on our servers.
Here's how to obtain your prior-year tax return if it was prepared in the CD/download software:
- Search your computer for your tax return file.
- After locating your file on your computer, open your tax return using the same tax-year version of TurboTax (e.g., open your 2009 return in the TurboTax 2009 program, not TurboTax 2010 or 2011). Otherwise, you'll get Error 539.
Lost or misplaced your prior-year CD or download? No worries. Click here for help.

You sure can! Here are two ways you can request a copy of a tax return that you previously filed with the IRS:
- Request a free transcript of your federal return. A transcript is used to verify income and most financial institutions accept it as a substitute for your original tax return. Click here for instructions or visit IRS Tax Tip 2010-13 for more details.
- Order an exact copy of your tax return, including all attachments, from the IRS for $57.00. See IRS Tax Topic 156 for complete instructions.
