California: Excess SDI does not get Recognized or Transfer to State

California entitles you to a credit for excess SDI or VPDI withheld if you meet certain requirements. TurboTax may present you with an interview screen that informs you that no excess California State Disability Insurance (SDI) or Voluntary Plan Disability Insurance (VPDI) was withheld.

Solution

To calculate excess SDI in California, TurboTax looks for income in Box 3 of the W-2. If 0.00 is present in box 3, TurboTax will not generate a credit for excess SDI. If you are an exempt employee with no FICA wages or withholding (i.e. government employee) you may not be subject to SDI.

If you feel that excess SDI should calculate, you must ensure that your Federal W-2 entered on the federal is not $0.00. Please look at your W-2 and enter the income or remove the $0.00 entries.
