Removing a State Amendment Form

Many states have an amendment form that lets taxpayers amend (change or correct) a state return that they already filed. The link at bottom of this page shows the amendment forms for each state that offers it.

The screen that asks if you want to complete an amended return usually appears towards the end of the TurboTax State interview, although in some states it appears right at the beginning.

If you accidentally tell TurboTax you want to amend your state return and don't complete the form, the final review will generate errors relating to an incomplete amendment form.

To remove an unwanted state amendment form, follow the instructions for your TurboTax product below. Which product do I choose?

TurboTax CD/Download software

  1. Open your return in TurboTax.
  2. Make sure you are in the state portion of the interview by clicking the State Taxes tab and then clicking the state's name (Arizona in this illustration).

  3. Go through the interview again and reverse any entries you made that have to do with an amended return, for example:
    • Answering No when asked if you want to file an amended return;
    • Clearing any checkboxes labeled amended return;
    • Deleting any entries you made in the tax year field.

      Tip: In a few state programs, you have to answer Yes to the amended return question so that you can access the interview screens that contain the information you want to delete.

  4. If you continue to receive errors related to the amendment form, manually remove the amendment form.
  5. Return to the interview by choosing Step-by-Step from the View menu.
  6. Run the review again to make sure the errors are gone as well.
  7. Go to the Print and Save tab.  Check the official forms to file option.
  8. Click Preview and view all tax forms.  The amended tax return should be deleted.

Sometimes, the amendment form remains despite following the instructions above. In that case, you'll need to delete your state return and start over.

TurboTax Online
