New York 2011: Part-Year New York City Resident With W-2

New York taxpayers who lived in New York City are subject to a New York City income tax, based on the length of their city residency during the tax year.

Certain customers, who were New York State residents living in New York City for only part of the year, may have filed an incorrect New York tax return.

TurboTax has fixed this issue.
 

How to tell if you may be impacted

You may be affected if ALL of the following are true:

  1. You filed your 2011 New York tax return before January 28, 2012 AND
  2. You filed a New York Form IT-201 as a full-year New York State resident AND
  3. You resided in New York City for only a part of 2011, and you had an amount less than 12 on New York Form IT-360.1, Page 2, Line 39 AND
  4. You had the letters “NYC” in Box 20 of your federal Form W-2 AND
  5. In the TurboTax interview, you chose to allocate 100% of the above W-2 income as earned while a New York City resident

If you are affected, your may have underpaid your New York tax. You may need to amend your New York tax return.

 You can make the corrections yourself.

  • To do it yourself, please follow these step-by-step instructions.
  • After you make the changes to your tax return, you will need to mail a copy of your amended state return.
  • Your printed return will include instructions on how and where to mail it.
  • If you need assistance, call us at the phone number in the email.

  1. Please download and print this Authorization Form.
  2. Complete the form and fax it to us at the number printed at the top of the form.
  3. A TurboTax representative will contact you (within 15 days) when your corrected return is ready to be securely emailed back to you.
  4. You can print, sign, and mail the corrected return to the state taxing authority.
