Delaware 2009: Information for Taxpayers Claiming Child-Care Credit on 1040-A

Delaware taxpayers preparing their 2009 federal Schedule 1040-A tax returns who qualify for the federal child-care credit will need to take special steps to claim the credit on their state tax returns.

The credit is not carrying over from the federal 1040-A to the state return.

Delaware residents who have already filed their federal Schedule 1040-A and state taxes and claimed the federal credit will need to amend their state returns to receive the state credit.

This issue was resolved in a product update  April 19, 2010.  If you are using TurboTax Desktop (CD or Download), please be sure to update your product before amending.  If you are using TurboTax Online, the product is already including this update.

Schedule 1040-A is for taxpayers who earn less than $100,000 and do not itemize their returns.

How to amend the return and claim the credit

  1. Open TurboTax or sign into your TurboTax Online account
  2. If TurboTax Desktop (CD or Download):
    1. Click on "Open Topic List"
    2. Scroll down to State Taxes/Delaware/State Interview/Miscellaneous/Additional Forms
    3. Click on "Amended Return"
  3. If TurboTax Online (signed into the website):

    4. Click on "Amended Return"
  4. On the "Additional Forms" screen, click "Yes" to the question "Do you want to file an amended Delaware personal income tax return?"
  5. You will then come to the "Filing an Amended Return" screen, where you will be asked if you want to begin filing an amended return.  Click "Yes".
  6. Click "Continue" on the Report Tax Year screen.  The screen shows the tax year for 2009.
  7. Next you will see the "About your Delaware Amended Return" screen.  A form (200-01-X) will appear.  This is the Delaware amend form.
  8. If you paid a balance due on your originally filed Delaware return, scroll down the amend form and enter that amount on line 20, amount paid.  If there is already an amount on that line, enter the correct amount you paid.
  9. If you received a refund on your originally filed Delaware return, scroll down the amend form and enter that amount on line 22, refund received.  If there is already an amount on that line, enter the correct amount you received.
  10. Scroll down to line 30 and that will show the refund that you will receive.
  11. Scroll down to page 2.  Check the "No" box for the question "Is an amended federal return being filed?"
  12. The next line says "If No, please explain."  In the blank lines, enter "Line 13 - the original Delaware return did not have the child care expense credit from the originally filed Federal Form 1040A."
  13. Now it's time to print your return to file and for your records.  Select the Print & File tab and then select Print/Save sub tab.

Note: Amended returns can not be e-filed.  You must print and mail the return to the indicated address for the state.
