Amending Your 2009 Return to Correct Medical Insurance Premium Deductions
Steps to amend
If you received 1099-R income for 2009, and your medical insurance premium was entered in both Wages & Income and in Deductions & Credits, then you need to amend your 2009 tax return.
To resolve this, you will need to amend your federal and state return.
You'll be instructed to open your federal return and then your state return to start the amending process.
Then you'll be given directions to make the appropriate changes. We recommend that you print these instructions.
Please follow these steps:
- Go to the Federal Taxes tab and select Other Tax Situations.
- Next to Amend a Return, select Start.
- Select the top line: "I already filed the tax return I want to amend, and it was accepted by the government." Then choose Continue.
- When asked “Are you here to amend your 2009 return?”, choose "Yes, I need to amend the 2009 return I already filed" then Continue.
- You'll be asked, "Have you made changes to the returns you filed?” Choose " No, I haven’t touched my 2009 returns since I filed them" then Continue.
- Next, on the “Tell Us About Your 2009 Tax Returns” screen, select the appropriate option – either e-filed or mailed.
- On the screen that says "Tell Us Why You Need to Amend Your Return," select "I need to change or add something to the return I already filed" then Continue.
- Save a copy of your return if you have not already done so and Continue.
- When you see "Tell Us Which Returns You Want to Amend" select the first line "I want to amend my federal and state returns" then Continue.
- Please don't print the instructions when prompted on the screen. Instead use the instructions in this article, which are written for this specific situation.
Now open you state return.
Follow these 2009 State Amending Instructions.
Now that you've opened both your federal and state amendment documents, you can go and make the changes on your federal return.
- Click on the Federal Taxes tab.
- Select Deductions & Credits in the row of links below the Federal Taxes tab.
- Select “Explore on my Own” (if prompted).
- Scroll down to the “Medical” section and select Update next to “Medical Expenses” (this step may be slightly different for free versions).
- Click “Yes” on the “Medical Expenses” screen.
- Continue through the screens until you reach a screen titled “Enter Insurance Premiums” screen.
- In the “Medical Insurance Premiums” field include ONLY the amount paid out of pocket for medical insurance premiums. So do NOT include the amount withheld for Medicare or government premiums. These will be added automatically to your medical expenses total.
- Click Continue.
- Under the Federal Taxes tab, select Other Tax Situations.
- Next to Amend a Return, select Update.
- Select the top option, “I’ve made my changes and need to finish amending my federal return" and Continue.
- On the first line for the Explanation of Changes, type "Deducted insurance/Medicare premiums withheld from government pension.”
- On the second line, type “Pension/Social Security deducted twice. Amending to only deduct once.”
- On the third line, type "Resulting from above changes.” Then Continue.
- On the “Follow your Amend Instructions” screen, select Continue.
Finally return to your state and make any needed changes.
Follow these 2009 State Amending Instructions.
Now you're ready to print your amended return.
