Federal 2011: ROTH IRA Conversions in More Than One Tax Year

Taxpayers, who converted to a ROTH IRA prior to 2010, had to pay the tax on that conversion in that tax year. However, taxpayers who converted in 2010 could elect to pay the tax on that conversion in 2011 and 2012.

Certain customers who had ROTH IRA conversions in both 2010 AND a year between 2006 and 2009, and received a distribution from a ROTH IRA in 2011, may have filed an incorrect tax return.

TurboTax has fixed this issue.

How to tell if you may be impacted

You may be affected if ALL of the following are true:

  1. You filed a 2011 federal tax return before February 16, 2012 AND
  2. You had a ROTH IRA conversion during BOTH of the following periods:
  • The year 2010 AND
  • A year prior to 2010 AND

    3. You chose to postpone paying tax on your 2010 ROTH IRA conversion until 2011 and 2012 AND
    4. You received a ROTH IRA distribution during 2011 AND
    5. You had a negative number on 2011 Form 8606, Line 29

If you are affected, you may have underpaid your federal tax. You may need to amend your federal tax return. Your state return may also be affected and if so, you will need to amend it.

You can make the corrections yourself.

  • To do it yourself, please follow these step-by-step instructions on:

  • After you make the changes to your tax return, you will need to mail a copy of:
