What are temporary absences?

You can still claim your child or other dependent, even if they weren’t living with you all year, as long as they meet the requirements of a temporary absence. This includes a child who normally lives with you full-time, but was away at school, in the military, or in the hospital. The dependent must be expected to continue living at home at some point.
