You can deduct the cost of buying, training and maintaining a guide dog or service animal as a medical expense. This includes food, grooming, vet care and premiums paid for a veterinary care policy. However, pet insurance and care aren't deductible, as animals are not considered dependents. Animals used in business may be deductible as a business expense.
